6.2 Eye injuries

Chemical burns to eye occur when something splashes into it when vapors/fumes of strong chemicals irritate the eye.

If you get chemicals in your eye:

  • Rinse with water for at least 15-20 minutes at an eye wash station.
  • You might need help to keep your eyes open, to force the water to all parts of the eye.
  • Seek medical advice.
  • During transport to the hospital keep rinsing your eye with an eyewash bottle.
  • If you got a compound that contains silver ions in your eye, do not use saline solutions to rinse with.
